Diana Soviero is one of the most recognized American opera singers of the 20th century, renowned as a singing actress who lived her roles intensely on the stage. A compelling interpreter of the verismo repertoire, Ms. Soviero created a gallery of unforgettable operatic portraits at leading international opera houses including: The Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Maggie Musicale Florentino, Torre Del lago Puccini, Caracalla Festival, dell’Opera di Roma, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Vienna Staatsoper, Deutsche Opera, Berlin, Bavarian State Opera, Théâtre National de l’Opéra de Paris, Opéra de Paris Bastille, Opéra national du Capitole, at Théâtre du Capitol in Toulouse, France, Hamburg Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Opéra de Montréal, Teatro Colon, Buenos Aires, Teatro Municipal de Caracas, Teatro Municipal de Santiago, The South African State Theatre, Pretoria, Chicago Lyric Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Houston Grand Opera, The Dallas Opera, Philadelphia Opera, San Francisco Opera, Baltimore Opera, and Opera Australia, Sydney.

Proclaimed “one of the world’s great singing actresses” by Opera magazine, Ms. Soviero was guided by her husband, stage director Bernard Uzan, and became renowned for her interpretations of Puccini’s heroines—Cio-Cio- San in Madama Butterfly, Mimì and Musetta in La Bohème, Liù in Turandot, Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi, and the title roles in Tosca and Suor Angelica—as well as for her work in the French repertoire. Other critically acclaimed roles include Violetta in La Traviata, Margherita in Mefistofele, and Maddalena in Andrea Chènier. Her final stage appearance was as Mrs. Desrochers in Jake Heggie’s Dead Man Walking at Baltimore Opera.

Ms. Soviero recorded standard verismo arias for the definitive album Verismo (Analekta), with l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Montréal, conducted by Joseph Rescigno. She was also a part of the compilation Telarc recordings Divine Sopranos and Classics of the Silver Screen, with Erich Kunzel conducting the Cincinnati Pops. The world premiere of Tobias Picker’s Thérèse Raquin, in which Ms. Soviero performed Madame Raquin, was recorded live with the Dallas Opera and released on the Chandos label.

Recently, Ms. Soviero has dedicated herself to teaching young singers, including many of the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artists. She has given master classes at, among many others, Glimmerglass, Montréal Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Opera Tampa,

Academy of Vocal Arts, Mannes, VOICExperience, the Israeli Institute, and universities throughout the U.S. She has been the director of the Young Artist Studio at Florida Grand Opera and a yearly participant in Joan Dornemann’s International Vocal Arts Institute, as well as an annual judge for the Metropolitan National Council Auditions and the Richard Tucker Competition. Ms. Soviero was awarded the Voice Education Research Award from the Voice Foundation in 2011 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Giulio Gari Foundation in September 2012.
